Heating Network
Veolia Energia Warszawa – Monitoring the Warsaw District Heating Network
This project, carried out as part of the ‘Smart District Heating Network’ initiative, is an example of the digital transformation of Poland’s largest district heating system – and the second largest in Europe. The aim of the project was to create a smart monitoring infrastructure enabling centralised management, analysis and optimisation of the district heating network’s operation in real time. Thanks to the implementation of ConnectPoint, Veolia Warsaw has gained an integrated system supporting efficiency, sustainable development and service quality.
The Challenge
The district heating sector in Poland faces challenges linked to rising CO₂ emission costs and the need to reduce its environmental impact. At the same time, customers expect a stable supply of heat, free from interruptions and breakdowns.
For Veolia, the key objectives were:
- to increase network management efficiency through data centralisation,
- to monitor infrastructure performance in real time,
- to improve service quality and response times to faults, reducing heat loss and energy consumption,
- ensuring stable and environmentally friendly supplies to over 18,000 buildings in Warsaw.
The Warsaw network comprises over 1,700 km of pipelines, 5,000 heat chambers and 16,800 nodes, which required an integrated management and analysis system.
Solution
ConnectPoint supplied and implemented a comprehensive solution comprising three key components:
1. Centralised Measurement Data Repository (CRDP). A system based on Aveva PI System (formerly Osisoft PI), which collects all data from district heating network components in real time, creating a single source of truth for analysis and reporting.
2. Main DOD (Dispatcher Operation Dashboard). System A Dispatcher Operation Dashboard presenting data from the CRDP and business systems in real time.
It enables:
- optimal network control, response to incidents and faults,
- visualisation of infrastructure on maps incorporating both real-time and historical data (over 40 data layers: pressure, temperature, chambers, valves).
3. Smart RDM – data reporting and distribution system. It enables the automatic generation and distribution of reports to the relevant people within the organisation, accelerating the flow of information and decision-making. Additionally, the system has been integrated with solutions for billing, asset management, field team management and the Decision Support System.
