RWE Renewables – Improving Wind Energy Efficiency Through Digitalization
RWE Renewables, a global leader in renewable energy, manages over 200 wind farms with a capacity of approximately 13 GW in Europe and the US. To increase efficiency and reduce costs, the company, in collaboration with ConnectPoint, implemented a central analytics and predictive maintenance system, replacing distributed, local solutions with an integrated, real-time data platform.
The Challenge
Wind power generation presents a number of challenges:
- variable weather conditions,
- the complex infrastructure of thousands of turbines,
- the need to integrate data from multiple systems,
- and maintenance difficulties that require specialist expertise and favourable weather conditions.
There is also a growing need for predictive analytics and data standardisation across different manufacturers.
RWE needed a solution enabling the integration of all data sources, real-time monitoring of turbine operation, predictive maintenance planning, and production forecasting based on weather and market conditions.
Solution
ConnectPoint has developed a centralised real-time data analytics system for RWE Renewables, based on Aveva PI System (formerly Osisoft PI) and integrated with Azure services.
The system enables the collection and standardisation of data from thousands of turbines and weather sources, the calculation of KPIs, production forecasting, measurement analysis and 24-hour generation planning. It combines operational and business data on a single platform.
Dedicated applications have also been developed, including:
- Control Room – a comprehensive overview of production and events,
- Downtime Notification Tool – downtime notifications with instructions,
- a reporting platform,
- Access Manager – turbine access management,
- mobile applications and IT tools for maintenance.
The solution supports predictive maintenance, automatic anomaly analysis and the day-to-day work of engineers thanks to a centralised view of the infrastructure.
